Bioshock, of all the games that’ll come out this year, is the one that requires the least introduction. Developed by the artist, ahem, studio formerly known as Irrational (now 2K Australia and 2K Boston), it’s a direct spiritual successor to the famed and fabled System Shock games, it has received more industry press attention over the last year than any other five titles combined, and its website, The Cult of Rapture, has become headquarters for a veritable multitude of fans long before the game even had so much as a tentative release date.
That kind of expectation cannot be bought, planned for or sold, and before you kids ask, the answer is that yes, the System Shock games, and the promise of an action game that would actually do something different, were well warranted the hype, the sleepless nights reading development briefs, and all the drooling over the many, many screenshots released over the course of the last year and a half. Bioshock rolls into the fray armed with nothing less than the most advanced graphical engine on the market today, a fistful of lightning, and a mindful to kick a sleeping industry awake. Let’s see how well it succeeds.
