Nokia's upcoming 264 million Euro
purchase of Symbian will soon see to the formation of the Symbian Foundation, a new mobile powerhouse that will surely rival the Android-developing Open Handset Alliance. Made up of Nokia, AT&T, LG Electronics, Motorola, NTT DOCOMO, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodafone, the Symbian Foundation will become a reality in early 2009 and, as stated by Nokia's Kai Öistämö, it will bear fruit quite quickly.
The current predictions and plans suggest that the Symbian Foundation will be able to deliver its first mobile software platform in about a year after its formation with the first handsets loaded with the solution expected to arrive in 2010. Of course, Android will have a time advantage as it is set to come before the end of this year, but Symbian OS is still in a dominant position in the phone market and it's likely it will stay on top until Symbian Foundation's operating system is ready.
