Memory manufacturer Elpida has just announced another "world's first" as it managed to develop a 1Gb DDR3 chip that tops 2.5 Gbps. Made using a copper interconnect process and new circuit technology, the new DDR3 DRAM will enable the breaking of the current DDR3 memory record of 2133 MHz and thus please most (if not all) overclocking enthusiasts.
The 1Gb chip can achieve 2.5 Gbps when powered by a JEDEC-approved 1.5V and can even operate at 1.35 and 1.2V when set to a lower speed.
Elpida has stated that it will start delivering samples of its new speedy DRAM before the end of the month.
