South Korean electronics titan Samsung is finally going to sell memory cards bearing its well-known brand, with Taiwan being the first country to get them later this month. Previously, Samsung only made 'white-label' cards for various electronics and memory card companies.
Part of the 'Plus' series, the upcoming cards feature a Class 6 speed rating, will be available in the following formats - SD (SecureDigital), microSD and CompactFlash, and have 4, 8 and 16GB capacities, the latter density being SD-only territory (for now).
Samsung's cards have a brushed silver metallic design or a natural beige epoxy compound casing, are shock- and water-resistant, and will deliver read speeds from 17 MB/s to 45 MB/s, depending on their type.
"The market for memory cards continues to grow in leaps and bounds as consumers push for added storage in smart phones and other mobile devices," said Dong Soo Jun, executive vice president, strategic marketing team, Memory Division, Samsung Electronics. "Our well-established leadership in the digital memory card space provides an ideal footing from which to launch premium memory cards that can match rapidly evolving high-end premium devices such as smart phones and high-performance digital still cameras. Our cards also provide consumers with more of the outstanding reliability that they have come to expect from Samsung semiconductor products."
Later this year, following their Taiwan debut, Samsung's Plus series memory cards are expected to become available in other select countries.
