American retail heavyweight Best Buy has recruited Sonic Solutions in order to launch a new on-demand service which will deliver movies and TV shows to a heap of Internet-connected devices. According to the official announcement, Best Buy will pre-load Sonic's Roxio CinemaNow solution on devices like TVs, portable media players, PCs, Blu-ray Disc players, set-top boxes and mobile phones so customers don't have to worry about getting a subscription or installing additional applications.
The VOD-enhanced hardware will obviously sold in Best Buy stores and via BestBuy.com and will enable users to buy or rent new movies, TV shows, independent films, and older catalog movies from a vast catalog of titles.
"With Best Buy's ability to drive in-store promotion and education, consumers will come to quickly understand and appreciate the convenience, flexibility, and control that digitally-delivered video entertainment affords them," said Dave Habiger, president and CEO, Sonic Solutions. "With Best Buy's focus, we expect on-demand entertainment to quickly grow into a mass market activity, with digital sell-through and rental becoming a significant new revenue stream for content owners."
The two companies have yet to say when we'll see the on-demand fruits of their collaboration.
