With every single one of its current desktop processors boasting a price tag below the $200 mark, and with Intel releasing new and not too much improved Core 2 processors with a 1333 MHz FSB, AMD has decided to release a new Athlon X2 CPU. The Athlon X2 6400+ will be the last of the Athlons and it will have to keep the interest in K8 CPUs at decent levels until AMD can produce enough Phenoms (Q1 2008).
The upcoming 6400+ will be built using the 90nm process and will feature two cores running at 3.2 GHz and have 2 MB worth of L2 cache. The new processor will require a BIOS update and it will have a price tag that hovers around the $224 mark.
Expect a stealthy introduction of the Athlon X2 6400+ as AMD can't be very proud of its performance. That pesky E6850 gets in the way of that.
