With a predicted annualized growth of about 124% for the 2008-2012 period you can understand why everybody is making or planning to make SSDs. With competition heating up it's pretty hard to stay on top but Samsung seems to be managing quite well as it has already announced a super fast 256GB SSD.
The new 2.5-inch drive has a SATA 3.0 Gbps interface, it measures 100.3x69.85 mm and offers massive transfer speeds (for a single drive) - up to 200 MB/s and 160 MB/s when reading and writing respectively, and it does that with multi-level cell (MLC) NAND chips.
The upcoming SSD has a MTBF of 1 million hours and is expected to enter mass production before the end of this year. A 1.8-inch version is also in the works and should become available in Q4.
