Last year Hitachi's storage division was talking about the advancements that a technology called current perpendicular-to-the-plane giant magnetoresistive (CPP-GMR) would bring and outlined a plan in which it would release 4TB 3.5-inch hard drives by 2011. Now, Hitachi Global Storage has upped the ante and is claiming that it will release a 5TB desktop drive by 2010.

The use of five 1TB platters to achieve the 5TB milestone may be a little 'spartan' but Hitachi has already used these many spinning disks for its 1TB offer. And now we wait?
