Provided yesterday, the change notification #109097-00 could have been the most banal of things but in fact it's Intel's way to prepare for the passing of a classic, the 2.4 GHz Core 2 Quad Q6600. A favorite of those looking for a decently-priced, overclocking-ready Intel quad-core, the 65nm CPU is now scheduled for a phase out as market demand has "shifted to higher performance Intel processors."

According to the #109097-00 notification, Intel will continue to take Q6600 orders until May 8, 2009 and ship the CPU in its box and tray versions until August 7 (2009) and July 10, 2010 respectively.
