The all-mighty Google is moving ahead with its virtual world domination plans and has now officially revealed that it is working on an operating system. Dubbed Chrome OS, the upcoming open source Linux-based solution will initially target netbooks and focus on three aspects - speed, simplicity and security.
The Chrome OS will work on x86 and ARM chips, have a minimal user interface and obviously focus on providing a top-notch web surfing experience. It will come with the Chrome browser, boot up super fast, and have support for web-based applications.
"Google Chrome OS is a new project, separate from Android," explained Sundar Pichai, VP Product Management and Linus Upson, Engineering Director. "Android was designed from the beginning to work across a variety of devices from phones to set-top boxes to netbooks. Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems."
Google is promising to open-source Chrome OS' code this year and aims to deliver it in the second half of 2010. More info is coming this fall.
