Linux maybe good and cheap but in my opinion not suitable for home usage. For your home pc I would just recommend Windows XP Home or Professional. This one will do best right now.

If you are getting an experienced user, try installing a Linux distro next to your Windows and then see for yourself. Ofcourse concerning Webservers I definitely say Linux. For fileservers Win2003 is best wink.gif

winxp? it 's nice but too expensive.
linux? it's too hard for normal user. I'm a normal user but i like this os.
In the end, I like dual boot : win98 \ win2k \ linux.

Yes I'm still using Windows 98SE here. But I'm slowly moving to Linux. It gives you a lot ore for the price you pay smile.gif

Installing Linux is easy. You should try Ubuntu Linux, Mandrake or Fedora. The install process has been greatly simplyfied and since when has a windows install been easy try install a new intel motherboard 775 chipset with windows 2000 biggrin.gif

Actually, my work has several Win95 laptops.
Problem is that we have some software packages that were written
for use in win95, but will not function in NT/2K/XP. Because our outsourced
computer support company (CSC) only allows us Win2K or Linux on any new computer, we were forced to prevent upgrading/replacing of these leased laptops with Win95. And I think my company pays CSC $250/month for the lease and support of each laptop despite the fact they only get used 4-5 times a year.

Thanks to outsourcing, the programmers and engineers that wrote the software are long gone, as well as the source code :-p

As a tech, I am still using 98 se on systems that are older than a p3 800 which need to be 'rebuilt.' Generally these are seniors who cannot afford a new PC and use AOL to connect to the web (occasionally use MS word to print out a recipe or something).

Most of the 'newer' PCs I have built, I have gone with XP. I still recommend at least 512 MB of RAM however.

I hate all windows 9x, I'm so glad they stopped making it. As soon as windows 2000 came out I upgraded and then when XP came out I upgraded. Linux is ok, but not for gaming.

Unless you happen to need professional software to do some real work on your computer, that is. Not even that is free on Linux.

I'm going to have to go back from Linux Ubuntu to W95.

I wanted to work under Linux but since I have to manualy mount my hard disks every time I reboot, and the floppy drive, I HAVE HAD ENOUGH! mad.gif

And it's going to have to be W95, because XP is to uppetty to know the older hard ware. And I can tell you for a $15.000 plotter I adept the OS to fit the hardware, and not the other way around!

Anybody want give me a hand in uninstalling Ubuntu properly?
Or I'm formatting the system disk.

I was happy with the upgrade to W98 in '98. I was always very fond of W3.1. It was such an easy and open system.
rolleyes.gif Ah the good old days. tongue.gif

lol, 3.1 and 3.11 rock! (remember those old ISA sound blaster 16 cards that just about every computer had back then, lol - I've got a cupboard full of them.)
I never really liked 95, it was probably to do with the fact that I went streight from 3.1 to 98SE. But I allways thought 95 was mainly lacking something. 98SE is the best! (still using!)
I like XP but too expensive to put on every PC. You can buy 98SE liscences fairly cheap on ebay now. (or just peel them off the computers at school rolleyes.gif )

I remember I once got XP-Pro SP1 working on an old Pentium Pro (150mhz) with a 2.5gb harddisk and 64MB of old RAM (those SIMMS things). lol

Millenium Edition Sucks! I used it for four years. All of the pretty colours! You couldn't help but love watching the blue screen as your computer did a physical memmory dump every 5 mins! tongue.gif (I heard once that microsoft employees were calling it Mistake Edition. biggrin.gif )

I remember that you could point the previous version search on old Microsoft upgrade disks (office 95/97 and Win 95) to themselves and it would install fine without a previous version of that program on the harddisk!

Commodore 64 were the best PCs ever and allways will be! (even though I hadn't even been born when they came out!)
