I don't believe Trend Micro & I'll never use it. It seems to find fake viruses right after installing it on a clean system, looks like it advertises of itself! It also doesn't seem to clean a number of infections though it says it could.

In fact, what you say is partially true. Pc-cillin most of the time don't delete virus, it tries to clean them, if it fails then it quartain them. but you can adjust this option its options.
However, I am pc-cillin user since version 2000, and now I am using Pc-cillin internet Security 2005. In fact, I had NEVER been infacted by a virus,trojan nor a worm. during 5 years I have got only ONE FALSE alarm, it told me that I was infect by RedCode when I wasn't.
Its firewall is very strong; even if you set it to low (all ports are opened) it will protect you from all worms.
I admit that pc-cillin couldn't handle spywares very well; but now in 2005 it does.
If you tried version 2002 then I agree with you it was too bad. very slow and less effective. but since version 2003, things changed.
My final word is, try it for 3 months and you will notice its security. it's really worth that price.

Anyway, I would recommend you to use Either Norton or G-Data Antivirus or Zonelabs or McAfee.... All of them are pretty good, just try them out and see for yourself!

Zonelabs Security suite is a good recommendation and NOD32 isnt that good at all anymore! Also NOD32 doesnt support the blocking of spyware and browser hijacks aswell as other major things that Zonelabs does in many ways.

Hi, Let's be honest !!
There is no perfect solution.
But there are features that Anti-virus MUST have, and features that Anti-virus SHOULD have.
For what I know a Must have features are :
//////////////////////////////////////////////////
Engine Specifications:
==============
1) A Rapid, yet with 0 false alarms scan engine.
2) Memory scan in order to desinfect/Kill viruses which are only loaded in memory Like Red Code virus and others.
3) Boot-time Scaning ability; because at this time (system boot time) most viruses are unbale to gain resources therefore are easy to clean.
Antivirus Program Specifications:
=====================
1) Must not be a resources hunger (unfortunately most Antivirus are resources hunger)
2) Easy & simple interface.
3) Intelligent, No meaningless messages or questions.
Easy to Update
==========
1) This is one of the most important things, because no matter how an AV is strong it will fail to detect new viruses, so update procedure must be automatic & easy.
To sum up, a BASIC Antivirus Must have a rapid & strong engine with automatic update and pre-setup to suit most people.
Before speaking about what is optional, we should know this what differentiate people choice is this part. what I see as optional someone else can see as a must have feature. but again we have to keep in mind that antivirus feature is not an anti-spyware feature, is not a firewall feature. it's true that all these three types of programs are in the same category which is Security Utilities; however they are different from each others.
Optional features are :
//////////////////////////
Buil-in Firewall
=========
Worms are ranked as the #1st threat on the net. Beleive it or not, you will get infected in minutes by a worm, and a basic AV will fail to stop them. Therefore it crucial to have a Firewall.
The problem with most firewalls is that they are very difficult to setup. some people may disagree, but are all PC users experts, all familiar with Ports, IPs, Protocols, and so on. The answer is NO.
So what most people need is a firewall that Blocks all Incoming traffic & allow Outgoing traffic by default. This does not mean that a firewall should have only this feature, but by this I mean a firewall should offer at least 80% of security and the rest is the AV Job. and to help people have a good time with firewall, firewalls should have a list of Pre-made exceptions which will allow some well know programs to work even if outgoing connections are blocked; for example, do you think it's OK if your firewall blocks MSN Messenger because it tries to open port 1863 and is it OK to show all these warnings & questions.
Buil-in Anti-spywares
==============
If worms are the #1st threat, then Spywares are the major raising threat on the net. There is no way to stop them, you can use ad-aware, Spybot, Gaint ASW, limited users account in Windows, however you will get infected. These stated softwares are for me only approaches to eleminate an infection, they can't stop them before the infection (I know you can block most of spywares, but it's again, it's the experts job).
Therefore a built-in Anti-spywares is highly recommanded. Again, we know it will not stop all spywares but at least AV, and other tool will help you clean all.
These are the most important optional features. however there are others like :
1) Anti-Spam (blcok spams in your e-mail client).
2) IM Security (Protect you from viruses & and others threats with using IM softwares.
3) Intrusion Prevention (Prevent you network and your system form unknown threat by monitoring programs activities).
4) Hurestic Scan (It the ability to scan executable content searching for malicious routins, very useful to detect unknown threats however it the give many false alarms)
5) Anti-phishing & Personal data protection (protect your passwords and credit cards)
6) Content filtring (very interesting feature for parents)
7) Memory protection. ( I have got very happy to see DEP in Windows XP SP2)
8) and others like Windows Registry Protection.
There are endless features that an AV may have.
To conclude, what I think should make up our choise is these three things a Good AV with Firewall & Anti-spyware included.

Perhaps you should check out
Virus Bulletin this is an independant organisation that tests virusscanners every month.
The scanner with the most awards is
NOD32 which I use daily and it's lean and mean i.e. low memory use and fast scanning. I have no problems with running the scanner and playing games.

The only one I trust to protect my pc is AVG and I recommend it to all my friends and know one has had any problems yet.
I have tried alot of others and was not happy with them so I went back to AVG.

Well there is no such thing as 100% detection or 100% false positive free AV (scan engine has nothing to do with FP,but signatures/heuristics).
Many users select free avast!,AVG or AntiVir and they are usually very happy. I also use avast! (although i have tested nearly all antiviruses on the market) and it gives very good protection. Not to mention it's totaly free.
From tests it turned out to be the best of free ones and sometimes came very close to products like NOD32(ESET) and even beat Pc-cillin(Trend Micro) in av-comparatives test in summer 2004.
Also VB100% (Virus Bulletin 100%) test don't tell anything about actual quality of the product unless you are subscribed to their magazine.
Panda Software stopped participating just because of that,and i don't blame them.

Well, in my opinion, Trend-micro Systems Internet Security 2005 is one of the best Anti-Virus protection software on the market. Lately, Hotmail decided to change their "Online-Scanning-Tool" from Mcafee to Trend Micro - no reason was given out.
Trend Internet Security 2005 is fast, easy to install and best of all doesn't waste a lot of memory usage or cpu usage.
I give Trend a thumbs up!

The reason for MS to switch from McAfee to Trend-Micro was too old version of McAfee scan engine. And i guess Trend Micro was cheaper too.
But i can't say it's better,because McAfee engine is one of the most advanced on market (along with Kaspersky).

Kaspersky is simply the best in my opinion. Used plenty AV's (Norton, McAfee, Grisoft AVG, Panda) and Kas. is the best one yet. Pretty ressources-hog-free too

At the moment I'm using Computer Associat, Etrust which Zone Alarm uses for their anti virus. Actually the firewall that came with it is Zone Alarm. It works well. I used Trend Micro and its a very good antivirus. Norton is ok, but with their new registration (since 2004) its gone down hill. People were having problems with the registration resetting itself and people were calling Symantec so they could get a new reg code. Mcafee just sucks, I've used it a few times and had to wipe my system because it kept crashing. I've talked to a few others with the same problem. Since version 3 Mcafee has goine down hill. Some of the free antivirus' are good, for a wile I used AVG and it worked fine. Just went with CA this time because it came free when I went with Road Runner.

Hi All
After reading the posts it seems that it boils down to personal pref'
I suppose it depends on the sites you visit
I need them all
I find that different AVs miss and find different things.

It may be very simple right now... after doing more and more research and doing a lot of testing I can make a final conclusion that Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition together with Microsoft Antispyware is the best preferred solution. Some of the reasons:
Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition
- Less resources (memory)
- Corporate edition so no registration problems
- Has many options to enable/disable messages while scanning (email)
- Detected over 99% of our virus tests
- Very easy to install and can work with firewalls
- Doesnt slow down your system at startup
- Costs are almost the same as normal antivirus software
- Now includes Expanded Threat Detection and Threat Categorization recognizes unwanted applications such as spyware and adware
- Threat Tracer identifies the source of blended threat attacks that spread via open file shares (e.g. Nimda)
- And much more...
For more information about Symantec Antivirus Corporate you may visit:
