Just weeks after its competitors announced an increase in their e-mail storage space, Google has struck back. The search engine giant has announced that their GMail feature will increase its storage capacity from 1 GB to 2 GB.
After the initial doubling of storage capacity, the company will add an undetermined amount to its capacity on a daily basis. No upper limit has been announced at this time.
'We wanted to make sure we have a plan in place for when people reach their storage limit,' Georges Harik, GMail product management direct explained. 'We don’t want people to worry that they might run out.'
The fear of running out of storage space is a fairly recent phenomenon. E-mail is no longer simple text anymore as photographs, video or voice messages are now often contained in e-mail transmissions. These take up far more storage space than simple text. As the use of these new technologies becomes more common, users need more space to store their e-mails.
So, Google has fired the latest salvo in the e-mail storage wars. Who makes the next move? Yahoo!? Microsoft? You can be sure the competition is just beginning.
